The COVID-19 pandemic has been a shock to the Kerala economy which suffered a huge loss of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). For mitigating the suffering faced by the people due to the Covid-19 pandemic and to boost the socio-economic status of the State, the Finance Minister has announced many programmes and policies. At this juncture, the Department of Economics conducted a national webinar on Weakening Strength of FM Magic Band -A Reading of Kerala Balance Sheet at 2 pm on 14th September 2021. Dr.Shaniba MH, Head of Department, presided over the programme. Dr.Resmi P Bhaskaran, Development Economist & Policy Analyst, EGROW Foundation, New Delhi was the keynote speaker. She described how the Finance Minister of Kerala handled the pandemic period by taking social and welfare measures which helped the government to contain the spread of the Corona Virus amidst the macroeconomic crisis. Economic Review discloses Kerala’s fiscal crisis began even before the pandemic. The speaker also raised concerns about the fiscal costs involved in the state’s high social spending.
