Al-Ameen College, Edathala, was selected by the Centre for Environment and Development as one of the agencies to conduct its flagship programme Urja Kiran 2022–23 to create awareness among the general public regarding efficient management of energy.

The awareness class began with a formal inaugural session. Dr. Sreeja S., Head of the Department of Physics, welcomed the gathering. Shri. Shibu Pallikkudi, Edathala Panchayat Member, delivered the presidential address. Smt. Preeja Kunjumon, Edathala Panchayat President, inaugurated the session, followed by felicitations by Smt. Seena Martin, President of Kudumbasree CDS Edathala, Shri. O. K. Alikunj, Former Vice President of Edathala Panchayat, Shri. G. P. Gopi, Sevana Library Joint Secretary, and Shri. Ashiq T. A., Sevana Library Committee member.

The awareness class was led by Mr. Srikumar V, an EMC resource person. The class was very engaging and interesting and could be thoroughly followed by laymen. He was able to instill in them the need for conserving energy, and the whole gathering unanimously agreed to reduce the next month’s energy bill by at least 100 rupees. Energy conservation pamphlets were distributed to the attendees as well as to the nearby shops and businesses. Ms. Bindu, a resident of Edathala Panchayat, shared her feedback about the programme. Feedback forms were also distributed to the participants to get an understanding of the impact of the class. There were a total of 85 participants (general: 23; self-help group: 8; local body: 2; students: 52). The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Asst. Prof. Shania Mary Jose.
