Department of chemistry conducted a seminar on the topic “Symmetry Operations & Group Theory” on 21st February 2024 for the final year BSc Chemistry students. Mr. Alex Kuriakose, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, St. Alberts College (Autonomous, Ernakulam, was the resource person. The objective of the seminar was to provide a systematic treatment of symmetry operations in chemical systems within the mathematical framework known as Group Theory. The concept of Symmetry Operations and Group Theory are very important to study the structure of molecule and group theory is one of the most powerful mathematical tools used in quantum chemistry and spectroscopy. Usually symmetry actually means the symmetry of molecules but the symmetry of some local atoms, molecular orbitals, rotation and vibrations of the bonds etc are very important. The topic was based on the curriculum provided and the resource person took the class from the very basic. He covered the fundamentals of symmetry elements and symmetry operations with the help of models and covers the perception of group theory syllabus of M G University curriculum. Mr Alex also taught the symmetry operations by using ball and stick model thus the three dimensional operations can easily conveyed to students. All the final year UG chemistry students participated in the program. At the end of the seminar opens for interaction with the students and the speaker answered many doubts raised by the students and the students were clarifying all their doubts and well enlightened by the topic. Thirty four students attended the session.
