Department of Chemistry conducted a knowledge dissemination programme “SCIENTIA 2k24” on 9th February 2024 at 1:30 pm in Govt. High School, Nochima. Three of our first-year BSc Chemistry students took classes on the topic “Fun with Chemistry”. The aim of the programme was to raise awareness about the relationship of chemistry with our daily life and the mysteries behind the chemistry in the human body. PowerPoint presentations and video clippings related to the topic were prepared and presented to 8th-grade students of the school.

            The programme was inaugurated by the Headmistress, Govt. High School, Nochima. The session started with a silent prayer. Muhammed Unaise, a teacher representative of the school gave an introduction to the students. The welcome address was done by the programme coordinator Dr. Shadiya MA, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry Al Ameen College and introduced the resource persons of the programme. The classes were taken by Fathima Beevi, Sreya P A & Fidha Kunjumuhammed U K of I BSc Chemistry. She has created awareness about the programme and also highlighted the precautions to be kept in mind while using various chemicals that we use in day-to-day life like that present in food additives, cosmetics, medicines etc. which created scientific thrust in the mind of students. Chemistry has a key role to play in understanding everything from viral structure to pathogenesis, isolation of vaccines and therapies, as well as in the development of materials and techniques used by basic researchers, virologists etc.

            The key features covered by the students were mainly about the discolouration of leaves, the origin of the Avogadro number, the colour of oxygen, the role of chemistry in the pandemic covid 19, the character of elements in the periodic table, how snails die by salt, removing stains from the cloth, how hydrogen balloon blowing in the air, why ice floats on water, a beautiful molecule in chemistry, tears while cutting an onion, etc.

            The presentation started with an interesting video of chemistry in everyday life. The session effectively supplemented the programme, making it more rewarding and treasurable. Through these classes, almost all aspects of chemistry were presented to the children in an interesting manner and the doubts of the children were cleared through this class. The audience also interacted well. The high school children got more information regarding the magic of chemistry in their day-to-day lives. Sixty-two students from VIIIth standard attended the session. Finally, the programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Karthik Krishna of final-year UG Chemistry student.
