On November 7, 2023, Northampton Environmental Solutions (NORTHAMPS ENV SOLUTIONS) conducted an online certificate course on Scientific Waste Management. The course aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage waste generated from scientific and laboratory activities. The course was led by esteemed faculty members Veena and Suvarna from Northamps Solutions. It spanned a duration of 15 hours, with daily sessions lasting for 1 hour each. The course attracted participants primarily from the B.Sc. Biotechnology programme. The students enrolled in the course showed a keen interest in understanding the principles and practices of scientific waste management. Their active participation contributed to the success of the programme. The course commenced with an in-depth exploration of waste management principles, emphasizing the importance of proper waste disposal, recycling, and environmental stewardship. Participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the different types of scientific waste and their potential impacts on human health and the environment. Faculty members Veena and Suvarna provided participants insights into the regulatory framework governing waste management in scientific settings. Students learned about relevant regulations, guidelines, and best practices for ensuring compliance with local, national, and international waste management standards. The course covered essential techniques for segregating, handling, and disposing of various types of scientific waste, including biological, chemical, and radioactive waste. Participants learned about proper storage, labelling, and transportation protocols to ensure safety and minimize risks.
Faculty members discussed strategies for minimizing waste generation in scientific laboratories through the adoption of green chemistry principles, waste reduction initiatives, and resource optimization techniques. Participants were encouraged to explore innovative approaches to minimize waste and promote sustainability
At the end of the course, examinations were conducted to assess participants’ understanding and mastery of the course material. Two students from the first-year Biotechnology programme, Humaira Kadagothi and Aamina Ibrahim, emerged as the top scorers, demonstrating their exceptional knowledge and comprehension of scientific waste management principles.
The online certificate course on Scientific Waste Management conducted by Northamps Environmental Solutions (NORTHAMPS ENV SOLUTIONS) provided participants with valuable knowledge and skills in managing waste generated from scientific activities. Through a comprehensive exploration of waste management principles, regulatory compliance, waste handling techniques, waste minimization strategies, and practical applications, participants are better equipped to contribute to environmental sustainability and safety in scientific laboratories.
