The post graduate department of Mathematics at Al-Ameen College, Edathala, organized an enlightening session on “Easy vs. Hard Problems in Mathematics” on September 8, 2023, at the college seminar hall. The program aimed to provide valuable insights into the intriguing world of mathematical conjectures and open problems, specifically catering to first-year MSc Mathematics students. Dr. Pravas K, an esteemed member of the department, led this engaging session.
During the session, Dr. Pravas K delved into various mathematical conjectures, notably highlighting the Collatz Conjecture and the Poincaré Conjecture. These conjectures, known for their complexity and unsolved nature, served as a focal point for discussion, captivating the audience’s attention and encouraging intellectual curiosity.
Furthermore, the session extended its scope to encompass open problems in graph theory that find applications in our daily lives. These practical examples bridged the gap between theoretical mathematics and real-world scenarios, making the topic both interesting and informative for the attendees.
The event, marked by active participation from the first-year MSc Mathematics students, was an educational journey that showcased the interplay between simple and complex mathematical problems. Dr. Pravas K’s expertise and engaging presentation style further enriched the learning experience.
The session drew to a close at 12:30 PM, leaving the attendees with a deeper appreciation for the challenges and beauty of mathematics. It was an insightful event that not only broadened the horizons of mathematical knowledge but also ignited a passion for exploring the fascinating world of mathematical problem-solving.
