On August 19, 2023, a group of 23 students, accompanied by faculty members Ms Sanooja M S, Ms Chinnu P S, Ms Remisha M S, and Ms Nazla K A, embarked on a field visit to Cherthala for the “Farming Innovations Expedition.” The farm of the famous YouTuber, Variety Farmer, was the main attraction of the trip, aimed at providing practical insights into modern farming practices and innovations.
The group departed from our institution premises at 7:00 AM on the designated date. We reached Variety Farmer’s farm in Cherthala at approximately 11:00 AM. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the farm staff and Variety Farmer himself. A brief introduction about the farm and its various initiatives was provided. Throughout the day, the group was guided through different farming practices adopted at the farm. This included organic farming techniques, the use of modern machinery, and sustainable irrigation methods. One of the highlights of the visit was the exploration of the chrysanthemum flower field. Students were fascinated by the vibrant colours and learned about the cultivation techniques employed to yield high-quality blooms. Another interesting stop was the watermelon field. The group witnessed firsthand the stages of watermelon growth, from seedling to mature fruit. Insights into pest management and optimal harvesting practices were shared. Throughout the tour, students actively engaged with Variety Farmer and his team, asking questions and seeking advice on various aspects of farming. Participants gained exposure to innovative farming techniques such as vertical gardening, drip irrigation, and companion planting. The visit emphasized the importance of sustainable farming practices to preserve the environment and ensure long-term viability. Variety Farmer’s success story inspired participants to explore entrepreneurship opportunities in the agricultural sector, leveraging technology and creativity. The farm’s involvement in community outreach programs highlighted the role of agriculture in fostering social and economic development.
The field visit to Variety Farmer’s farm in Cherthala was an enriching and educational experience for all participants. It provided valuable insights into modern farming practices and instilled a deeper appreciation for the agricultural sector’s importance. The trip catalyzed students to explore careers in agriculture and contribute to sustainable food production.
