On October 3, 2023, our college organized a debate competition aimed at fostering the soft skills of students. The event took place in the mini seminar hall and revolved around the thought-provoking topic of “News Channels: Breaking the Rules for Breaking News.”
The event commenced with an opening address highlighting the importance of developing soft skills such as public speaking, research, and logical reasoning, which are essential for personal and professional growth in today’s competitive world by program coordinator Seethal George. Mohammed Hafiz of 3 rd BA deliver the welcome address. Moderator of the debate was Nabisthul Misriya
The debate saw passionate arguments from both sides of the topic. Participants supporting the motion argued that news channels often prioritize sensationalism over accuracy, leading to unethical practices in reporting breaking news. They emphasized the need for responsible journalism and adherence to ethical standards, even in the rush to report breaking events.
On the opposing side, participants argued that news channels have a duty to provide timely information to the public, especially during critical events, and that the pressure to break news quickly is a result of audience demand for up-to-the-minute updates.
Following the debate competition, an exhibition of mini documentaries created by 3rd-year students was held. These documentaries explored a range of social, environmental, and cultural issues, demonstrating the students’ creativity, research skills, and storytelling abilities. The documentaries provided a visual and insightful perspective on various topics, sparking discussions and raising awareness among the audience.
The combined event of the debate competition and mini documentary exhibition not only fostered the soft skills of students but also highlighted their talent, creativity, and ability to address complex issues through different mediums. Such events play a crucial role in enhancing students’ overall development and preparing them for future challenges in the media and communication field.
