The Department of Biotechnology organized “World Environment Day Celebration2018” with the support of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment with focal theme “Beat plastic pollution”. The programmes generated awareness among the students, and general public to realize the after-effects of plastic contamination and to do collective efforts to reduce plastic by adopting methodology of refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle of plastic and also getting people to change their behaviour of throwing away plastic. On 5th June 2018 Prof. Sasidharan M.B., Principal inaugurated the program by cleaning the college campus and also by planting a tree sapling at College Campus at 11.00 am. Staffs and students also actively involved in cleaning campus and planted tree saplings all around the campus. Department installs “BT green campus mission -2018” together with Kerala Scraps Merchants Association (KSMA) as a part of the programme. To accomplish this aim students of the department collected plastic waste from the nearby households and thus contributed to the green campus mission. On 22nd June 2018, Department conducted Nature scavenger hunt as an in-house program themed “Back to nature”. 10 teams from different departments of the college participated in the event. The feedback of the program was positive and appreciated by the staff and students. On 25th June 2018, we conducted a seminar at Seminar Hall at 10.00 am. The seminar sought to give a human face to Environmental issues. Prof Sasidharan M.B., Principal, presided over the meeting. Mrs. Rahimol Ramesh, Head of the department of Biotechnology welcomed the gathering. Prof. Reghunanthanan, Professor, IRTC, Environmental researcher inaugurated the program and addressed the students. The inauguration was highlighted by thumb impression pasted on a virtual tree. An oath was taken declaring a solemn promise to protect Mother Nature by reducing and reusing plastic waste. The talk delivered by Prof. Reghunanthanan V R on “What’s wrong with plastics?” underlined the importance of environmental issues and how to solve these issues by implementing positive actions to reduce plastic waste. The talk was inspiring and motivating.
The next session was a talk and official launch of “BT green campus mission -2018” done by Mr Abdul Rasheed, Secretary, KSMA, Ernakulam, Kerala. His talk titled “Consume With Care, We Have Only One Planet And Environment” was very beneficial. Biotechnology department together with KSMA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for reducing Plastic Pollution. Mrs. Bicky Jerin Joseph; Chief Coordinator delivers the vote of thanks. The third session was an Arts and Craft exhibition that focuses on sustainability was organized by the department together with Varnam enterprises, Perumbavoor. It also promotes sale of the exhibited items the exhibited items. The exhibition was a complete alternative of
commonly used plastic daily hood products.
The forth session began with a Quiz Competition on “Environment and Biodiversity”. 5 teams from our college and 8 teams from neighboring colleges, with a number of 2 members in each team, were participated in the competition. The fifth session starts with a Poster Designing Competition on “Beat Plastic Pollution”. One student from our College and 6 students from neighboring college were participated in the competition. Two judges from various departments of the college evaluated all the competitions.
Around 340 students participated in the programme. The session concluded with the prize distribution by Mrs.Rahimol Ramesh, HOD, Biotechnology, Al-Ameen College followed by valedictory function. First prize winners of Quiz and Poster Designing were awarded with 1000 rupees cash prize during the valedictory function. The aim of the programme was to create awareness among the participants and the public
emphasizing the responsibility of each and every individual in protecting our environment by reducing plastic products and also on the consequences if we fail to do so. Feedbacks from the participants were positive. This event had highly motivated them and they also enjoyed taking part in all technical events. The entire programme was coordinated by Mrs Bicky Jerin Joseph (Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology), Mrs. Rahimol Ramesh (HOD, Department of Biotechnology), Mrs. Alphy Nisa Steaphen (Ass.Prof), Dr Dhanya V (Ass.Prof) and Mrs. Chinnu P.S(Ass.Prof). The students of Biotechnology whole heartedly cooperated to make the event a grand success.
