On 19 December 2023, the Department of Physics at Al Ameen College, Edathala, in collaboration with the Breakthrough Science Society, Ernakulam Chapter, organized an engaging Solar Astronomy Program. The event aimed to promote interest in solar astronomy, telescope making, and sunspot watching among students and enthusiasts.

The program commenced with an inaugural ceremony, featuring welcome addresses from faculty members and representatives of the Breakthrough Science Society. They emphasized the importance of solar astronomy in understanding the dynamics of the sun and its impact on Earth’s climate and technology.

The highlight of the program was a hands-on workshop on telescope making, where participants learned the basics of telescope construction using simple materials readily available in their surroundings. Expert astronomers and technicians provided guidance and assistance, helping participants assemble their own telescopes.

Following the telescope making workshop, participants engaged in a sunspot watching session. Under the guidance of experienced astronomers, participants observed sunspots and learned about their formation, characteristics, and significance in solar astronomy.

Throughout the program, interactive sessions were conducted to educate participants about solar phenomena, including solar flares, prominences, and coronal mass ejections. Participants were encouraged to ask questions and actively engage with the subject matter, fostering a spirit of curiosity and inquiry.

Overall, the Solar Astronomy Program was a resounding success, igniting curiosity and enthusiasm for astronomy among participants and fostering a deeper appreciation for the wonders of the cosmos.
