On 30 August 2024, the Department of English at our college organized an individual mini documentary production activity as part of the BA English curriculum. This initiative aimed to provide students with practical experience in documentary filmmaking, enhancing their technical skills, creativity, and critical thinking.

Objectives

  1. Practical Application of Theoretical Knowledge: To bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical application in media production.
  2. Skill Development: To develop students’ technical skills in filming, editing, and sound design.
  3. Creative Expression: To enable students to express their creativity through visual storytelling.
  4. Critical Engagement: To encourage students to engage critically with social, cultural, and political issues through documentary filmmaking.

 Process

  1. Topic Selection: Students selected topics that resonated with them personally or addressed pertinent social issues. This involved in-depth research and the creation of a narrative structure.
  2. Pre-Production: Students prepared scripts, storyboards, and shooting plans, which included scheduling interviews, selecting locations, and obtaining necessary permissions.
  3. Production: Students captured footage, conducted interviews, and gathered visual and audio elements to support their narrative.
  4. Post-Production: Editing the footage to create a coherent and engaging documentary, involving cutting and sequencing clips, adding voiceovers, music, and sound effects, and ensuring technical quality.
  5. Review and Feedback: Completed documentaries were reviewed by faculty members, who provided constructive feedback to help students refine their work and learn from the experience.
