The Department of Economics in association with Department of Commerce organized a discussion on Kerala Budget 2019-20 on 05.02.19. The budget discussion was moderated by Prof. Nithin Thomas, HOD of Economics, Bharath Matha College. At the commencement of the programme ,Prof Nithin Thomas gave a brief analysis on the Kerala budget and its implications in different spheres of the society .Discussion deliberated on a large number of areas relating to union budget 2019-20 including the macroeconomic dimensions of the budget, impact of union budget on industry, capital market, economic growth and social sector. The students expressed the view that the budget presented by the Finance Minister Dr. Thomas Isaac focused on rebuilding Kerala after the flood-2018. The audience are also of the opinion that one-percent-flood-cess which would be imposed on the products in addition to the GST will help the reconstruction of the state. Emphasis on matters relating to GDP, Revenue deficit, flood cess, liabilities etc are also came under discussion. The moderator concluded the discussion stating that this budget is important from the point of view that it will contain the government’s proposals to rebuild Kerala after the devastating Kerala Floods of 2018.
