A seminar was organised by the Department of Chemistry on the topic “Manufacture of Petrochemical Products & Career Opportunities in Petroleum Industries” by our alumni Santhosh Kunjappan. The talk was held on 08th January 2024 for the final year BSc Chemistry students in their class room. The resource person of the day was our pre degree 1988-90 batch student, currently working as General Manager at Geo Plastics & Polymers Malappuram District Kerala. The company mainly based on the manufacturing of PVC conduit fittings and PVC rigid electrical conduits. The seminar started with a silent prayer followed by a welcome address by our dear HoD Dr Leji Latheef. She gave a brief introduction to our guest. The objective of the programme was to create an idea about the origin of petroleum in the earth crust, its exploration, distillation as well as the importance of the manufacturing of different petrochemical products. The session also aimed at guiding students in making better career choices in various petroleum industries were the key attraction of the talk.
The main areas discussed by the resource person were:
- Exploration and exploitation of crude oil
- Design and develop methods for extracting oils and gas from deposits below the earth’s surface
- Different exploration techniques
- Manufacturing of different petrochemical products
- Application of various petrochemical products in diverse industries
- Numerous possibilities of Career opportunities in petroleum industries
The resource person started the session by explaining the origin of petroleum in the earth crust. Various exploration techniques for the plastic manufacturing processes were also well explained by the speaker.
He also emphasized on various petrochemical industries in India and the vast job and higher studies opportunities abroad. He clarified the doubts of the students and offered suggestions to make a better career in future. The students interacted well in the session. 34 students attended the session. The students were inspired by the unreliable success story of the resource person.
The topic covered by the resource person is well suited in the present scenario, since the students were appearing their final examination and facing the selection for better career and related issue in their higher studies. The subject discussed by the resource person was clear and was quite interesting. Finally the session opens for discussion, audience cleared their doubts and after all she delivered an idea about different carrier opportunities in the field of chemistry and petrochemical field.
