The Department of Chemistry organised an alumni lecture series by our eminent alumni. The talk 1 of the programme was conducted on 27th September 2023. The resource person of the day was L. Shyam Mohan, our BSc Petrochemical 2011-2014 batch student, Operator, PETCHEM, BPCL, Cochin Refinery. The topic of the programme was “introduction to petroleum and petrochemical products”. The seminar aimed to provide the participants with comprehensive understanding of petroleum, and its refining processes and diverse range of petrochemical products derived from it. The programme began with a silent prayer and the head of the department Dr. Leji Latheef welcomed the chief guest. The Vice Principal Prof. Indu G also gave a short introduction about our alumni.
The seminar commenced by explaining that petroleum is naturally occurring fossil fuel composed of hydrocarbons. It is extracted from underground reservoirs and is crucial energy source worldwide. He also explained about different refining processes, emphasizing the separation of crude oil into various components such as diesel, jet fuel, gasoline etc. He explained about rigging for extracting crude oil and also about offshore and onshore rigging briefly.
The session provided an extensive overview of petrochemical products and highlighting their diverse nature. He also taught about test for finished products like ASTM, ISO etc. A total of 80 students participate in the seminar and they got an overview about petrochemical industries and also job opportunities related to it. The session was very interesting and successfully provided solid foundation in the students about petroleum and its refining as well as its vast array about petrochemical products. He clarified the doubts of the students and offered suggestions to make a better career in future in petrochemical industries. The students were inspired by the success stories of the resource person. The session ended with our student coordinator’s vote of thanks.
