One day seminar on IPR &PATENT was conducted on 23 November 2018, organized by Department of Biotechnology, Al –Ameen College, Edathala. Intellectual Property (IP) is a category of property that includes intangible creations of the human intellect, and primarily encompasses copyrights, patents and trademarks. It also includes other types of rights, such as trade secrets, publicity rights moral rights and rights against unfair competition

The seminar aimed to create IPR awareness among the teachers, students and young intellectuals about the beneficial aspect of patenting their creative and novel ideas such awareness would in time be highly essential for promotion of creativity, research and technical achievements. The programme was started at 10.00 AM. Key speakers of the session were Dr.V.S.Basheer, Principal scientist and SIC PMFGR Centre Kochi and Adv.Febin James, Trade mark Attorney and partner, Legalities IP Services, Thrissur. In the inaugural session Dr.Dhanya V delivered the welcome speech. The college principal Professor M.D.Sasidharan presided over the function. He gave a brief introduction about the seminar in his presidential address.Mrs.Alphy Nisa Stephen and Mrs.Thasny Faisal were the coordinators. The first session of the programme was started by Dr.V.S.Basheer. He started the session by sharing his views on recent improvements in patents and also provided a very informative presentation on “MOLECULAR BARCODING FOR IDENTIFICATION OF SPECIES”. He explained about Trademarks, Industrial Designs, and Geographical Indications .The class was very interesting and created firsthand knowledge about IPR to students. The duration of the class was 1 hour. Vote of thanks was delivered by Neema Jose of First year Biotechnology.Momento was handover by Mrs. Alphy Nisa Stephen. The second was handled by Adv.Febin James. The second session dealt with “PATEND SYSTEM IN INDIA AND PATEND FILING PROCEDURE”. He gave a detailed explanation on Patentable and non patentable products. He also shared many of his life experiences and also about those who came to him with their creation to be right protected. The duration of the session was 1 hour.Momento was handover by Mrs. Thasny Faisal. Vote of thanks was delivered by Mrs. Ramseena of third year biotechnology.

Afternoon session was an expo conducted by the students. Intercollegiate poster designing competition on patented innovations in biotechnology. Students from MES College, Marampally, MES College, Edathala and UC College, Aluva were participated. Judges of the competition was Mrs.Deepthy, Assistant Professor Dept.of Business Administration and Mrs.Vijaya Gopinath, Assistant Professor Dept. of Computer sciences. Mrs.Noorain Assim was selected as the winner from 42 candidates. The one day seminar was readily informative and benefited every one gathered.
