HMT Forest is a thickly wooded area that spreads over 72 acres in a property owned by Hindusthan Machine Tools (HMT) at Kalamassery, Ernakulam. It is an ‘Urban Canopy’ (Nagarathile Ithiripacha) rich in biodiversity, housing around 180 avian species including the state butterfly of Kerala. Several plants, trees and insects were also identified by nature conservationists from this area. But this greenery is vanishing in the past two decades as the city shifted gear to the realms of urbanization. So as it is mandatory to protect HMT forest in the present situation, The Greengrace (an organisation of photographers, wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers to protect HMT Forest) conducted a ‘Safeguarding Zone’ as a part of ‘The Global Climate Strike’ on 06/03/2020 at 4.00 p.m. at Kalamassery.

The Nature club of Al Ameen College Edathala also participated in the protest.

Total of 13 students from nature club, club coordinator Ms. Alphy Nisa Steaphen, club executive committee member Ms. Sulfith Salim and the technical supporter Mr.Safeer Ummer participated in the program. Members take oath to protect HMT Forest. They also participated in ‘The Global Climate Strike’. The program was a great success with the participation of hundreds of people including social activists, nature lovers, ladies and even children.
