DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

OUR DEPARTMENTS

Biotechnology Lab

Biotechnology is a research oriented science including a fusion of biology and technology. the vision of our programme is to produce competent biotechnologist which will profoundly influences the existing paradigm of agriculture, industry, and health care providing a sustainable edge to the present society. The practical aspects of biotechnology have an impact on a number of sectors and disciplines which aims at applying various techniques for the betterment of mankind. this includes genetic engineering, tissue culture, microbial technology, environmental biotechnology, industrial biotechnology, bioinformatics and so on.

The objectives of practical segment of the programme is to:

  • Develop the basic laboratory techniques of a biotechnology or bioscience lab
  • Supplement and enrich the lecture portion of the course, which deals predominantly with biotechnology techniques
  • Develop critical thinking skills in the students
  • Encourage teamwork and accountability among the students
  • Practice accuracy in calculations and in writing scientifically
  • Develop multitasking skills
  • Encourage students to take charge of their learning
  • Learn the responsibilities associated with working in a company

Major objective of the lab is to apply the general principles and standards of technology transfer and ensure adequate training of our students in modern technology. Our lab is equipped with the following instruments

  • Cooling centrifuge:  A sophisticated apparatus consisting essentially of a compartment spun at high speeds to help separate liquids from solids Used especially in molecular biology experiments
  • Shaking incubator: An apparatus used to control the environment to culture and grow bacteria and hatching eggs artificially or to provide a stable environment for a reaction.
  • Electrophoresis chamber: A chamber used in gel electrophoresis that conducts an electric current.
  • Distillation apparatus: An apparatus used to purify liquids and separate components in mixture.
  • Magnetic stirrer: Used to mix or agitate solutions.
  • Microfuge tubes: Used to hold small measures of liquids to be used in a centrifuge.
  • Laminar air flow chamber: Used to prevent contamination of semiconductor wafers, biological samples or any particle sensitive device.
  • Digital scale/electronic balance: Used to measure small amounts of weight
  • Micropipette: Used to measure exact amounts of small liquids
  • Hot air oven: Electrical device used use dry heat to sterilize.
